[...] Two: David Toub plans a new work and outlines: “I’m planning a new piece for what probably will be an ensemble consisting of two women’s voices, violin, cello, marimba, bass clarinet, bass guitar and possibly piano. The work is tentatively going to be titled torture memos (a survivor from guantánamo). The music is already largely written, in that it will mostly be derived from several recent improvisations that were done as part of James Combs’ improvfriday sessions on various social media networks. Almost all of my works started off as improvisations, so this is pretty much standard operating procedure for me. I had thought of using the title Room 101 as that was the torture room in Orwell’s prophetic novel 1984 but I thought the significance might not be obvious to anyone who hasn’t recently read the book.” [...]

Nice post, David. Glad to hear this news! I'm finishing up the touches on a debate which has sidetracked into torture.

Feel free to borrow it Paul. I read some of the poems and they're just not working for me. I'm thinking the wordless route (pure music) might work best. But that's just me, I think.

I read the sample poems posted at artpredator and Huffington Post and they remind me of a class of literature in the OT called Psalms of lament. You mix some of the detainee works with, say, Psalm 10 or Psalm 142 and maybe some of Bohnhoeffer's poems from prison and you would have a very powerful piece.

In fact, your idea is good enough to "borrow"....

There is a book of poetry written by Guantanamo detainees. A sample is given along with the publishers information, here: http://artpredator.wordpress.com/2009/03/09/poems-from-guantanamo-the-detainees-speak/

Might be worth a look.
